Why Marathon Bars Were Discontinued After An 8-Year Stretch
By Crystal Antonace
Mars is known for many beloved candy bars, such as Twix, Snickers, and M&M's candies. Their Marathon bar was wildly popular in the 1970s until it was discontinued in the 1980s.
This candy bar was composed of chocolate and caramel and was longer than most candy bars, but it only lasted in the retail marketplace from its debut in 1973 until 1981.
Although no one knows why Mars pulled this candy variety from its lineup, some speculate that it was because eating this bar was a real-life marathon.
They were longer than most candy bars, measuring 8 inches long, and the brightly colored packaging displayed standard hash marks to prove it.
In one 1975 advertisement, the brand's spokesperson, "Marathon John," proves the bar can't be eaten in just a few minutes, confirming the candy's tagline: "lasts a good long time."
For those who miss Marathon bars, Cadbury's Curly Wurly bar is a thin, 8-inch braid of milk chocolate and caramel.
