Beer is often considered America's most popular alcoholic beverage, but with trends like Wine Wednesdays and Wine Moms, wine is more pervasive than you might think.
When it comes to consumption by volume, the state of California wins by a mile. This is partially due to having significantly more people than anywhere else.
It also produces 81% of the country's total wine output, much of it from Napa Valley, and if the source is right at hand, it's not surprising people would drink more of it.
On a per capita basis, the winner here is Washington, D.C. At 1.01 gallons per individual, it's well ahead of the nearest competitor, New Hampshire, which sits at 0.84 gallons.
Part of this is self-selecting; a lot of people in D.C. are in the business of politics and lobbying and would likely favor the high-class aesthetics of wine over a can of beer.
