What Type Of Alcohol Classification Is Cognac?
By Christina Garcia
Cognac can only be made with grapes grown in the Cognac region of France and must be aged in French barrels, which technically means it’s a type of brandy.
Cognac begins as white wine, similarly to other types of brandy. What truly sets cognac apart from other spirits made from white wine is how it is distilled.
Cognac is made in a copper pot and distilled twice. It is usually made from Italian Ungi Blanc grapes, which grow in a unique climate that imparts a different flavor profile.
Cognac must also be blended to create a finished product with depth of flavor and must age for at least two years, though there are plenty that age for much longer.
