What Exactly Is A New England Steak Bomb Sandwich?
By C.A. Pinkham
Americans love beef, especially classics like the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. However, it has a close, equally beloved cousin: the New England steak bomb sandwich.
This East Coast sandwich is loaded with shaved steak, provolone or mozzarella cheese, red or green peppers, white onions, mushrooms, mayonnaise, and salami for a salty twist.
The bun is lined with salami before the steak is added, creating an extra layer of cured meat stability, and includes add-ins like cherry pepper relish (also known as "hots").
A steak bomb can be made on a sub roll, but it usually features a round roll, like a Kaiser roll. It's likely to explode out the sides, which is preferred by fans of this sandwich.
The steak bomb's origins are shrouded in mystery. A restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, called Louis' Lunch, claims to have invented it, and it's wildly popular in New England.
