The Toast Hack For A Superior Sandwich-Eating Experience
By Allie Ward
Whether a towering masterpiece from a gourmet deli or a humble PB&J, no one likes a soggy sandwich. To avoid taking a saturated bite, only toast one side of the bread.
Thai Dang, chef-owner of HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen in Chicago, says that, in addition to preventing sogginess, the hack "also prevents […] your mouth from getting scratched."
Martha Stewart endorses this method, stating that crisping the inside of the sandwich helps maintain the bread's foundational integrity and support the moist ingredients.
One way to toast only one side of the bread is to stack two slices of bread on top of one another in a toaster oven so only the outsides of each slice crisp up.
A similar approach can be taken with a traditional toaster. Depending on the thickness of the bread, you may be able to insert two slices of bread back-to-back in one toaster slot.
You can also rely on the trusty stovetop. Start by heating olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add bread and toast until golden brown on one side.
