The One Ingredient McDonald's Swapped To Improve The Egg McMuffin
By Arianna Endicott
In 2015, McDonald’s started using real butter on its Egg McMuffins. Previously, the fast food chain used liquid margarine, but real butter became the new standard.
The other ingredients that make up the Egg McMuffin include an egg patty, a slice of Canadian bacon, melted American cheese, and, of course, melted butter.
Since butter is made from heavy cream, its addition to the breakfast sandwiches adds an extra smooth flavor, which makes for a little added richness in every bite.
The butter isn’t just limited to the Egg McMuffins. No matter what McDonald’s breakfast sandwich you order, McDonald’s will add that rich, real butter.
While butter’s taste is favorable, it’s not as health-conscious as margarine. Butter includes saturated and trans fats, which increase cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.
Still, some champion butter’s taste over margarine. According to Anchor Food Professionals, butter melts at a lower temperature than margarine, which can make for a better flavor.
While the switch from liquid margarine to real butter may not have been a health-conscious decision, McDonald’s has chosen to promote food quality and flavor above all else.
