Horseradish Adds The Perfect Extra Zing To Your Pot Roast
By Kalea Martin
A pot roast can turn out pretty one-dimensional, especially if you only add the bare minimum of ingredients. To enhance your dish, you only need a bit of horseradish.
Horseradish has a sharp, peppery flavor, so adding it to pot roast introduces a layer of zestiness, resulting in a more balanced and satisfying pot roast.
Prepared horseradish, the most commonly available type, is actually pickled vinegar. The vinegar tenderizes the meat in the pot roast.
You can add as much as a whole 8-ounce jar for a chuck roast of about 4 pounds. It won't overwhelm the dish because the juices from the meat and vegetables will dilute it.
For a subtler zing, a tablespoon of prepared horseradish can act as a flavor enhancer, especially if you're making a New England pot roast.
The amount of horseradish you add should come down to how tender you want the meat to be and how zesty you want the final product to taste.
