Condensed Milk Is The Key To Upgrading Boxed Cake Mix
By Crystal Antonace
There are many ways to make a standard yellow or chocolate boxed cake mix seem homemade with a few simple ingredient swaps, and one helpful addition is condensed milk.
Condensed milk adds moisture and a hint of developed sweetness to your next boxed cake. This non-refrigerated dairy product is made from concentrated milk that has been sweetened.
The result is a thick, sticky liquid that can be added to several different foods to render additional richness or a softer, complimentary texture to your favorite baked goods.
Unlike evaporated milk, condensed milk can't replace milk or water in a 1:1 ratio. It needs to be diluted with 50% water, and its sweetness may affect the flavor of your cake.
You can also use condensed milk as a topping or combine it with evaporated milk and cream as a delicious soaking mixture for a moist, boxed cake version of Tres Leches cake.
Try poking holes in your freshly baked cake and pour condensed milk over it as an icing or glaze. The cake absorbs the thick, sweet milk and makes for an extra rich treat.
