Spanish Bar In Hot Water Over Sexist Ad For Single Barmaids

There are a lot of skills that go into being a good bartender, but some bars keep getting into trouble for advertising for female bartenders with qualities that have nothing to do with making and serving drinks. Not long ago a Spanish bar sparked a lot of anger after running an ad for a female bartender that specified she "must have big breasts." Now a completely different Spanish bar is taking a lot of heat for running a job ad for good-looking women with nice bodies who were also single.

According to The Local, the Richard New Look bar is on the beach in Benidorm, in Eastern Spain, and recently it was looking for some new employees. So the bar posted an ad to Facebook and Instagram.

"We're looking for girls, 18 years plus, good-looking and with good physique, lots of experience making drinks and good with people," the ad said. "Responsible and single. We don't want boyfriends sick with jealousy hanging around at 5 a.m. waiting to take you home, much less in the bar trying to control you. These are the conditions, simple and straightforward and if you don't like them, don't waste our time applying for the job. It's obligatory to wear heels or platforms."

A lot of people were offended by the ad and thought it was weird and inappropriate for a bar to specifically put out an ad for employees who did not have boyfriends. The idea that a woman would also have to wear high heels of platforms through a whole shift while standing behind a bar also raised some issues. Servers and bartenders spend a lot of time on their feet and carrying drinks, and many people would find high heels or platforms extremely inconvenient for actually getting the job done.

Bar manager Julio Granado later removed the ad after being called a "sexist pig" by commenters on Facebook, but he stuck by the job requirements, saying that the high heels were about being able to reach over the bar, and that the bar had specified single employees because they didn't want jealous boyfriends coming in and starting fights.
