Paula Deen Compares Herself To Michael Sam, It Goes Badly
Less than a week after she announced her comeback and just hours after she announced Paula Deen's Family Kitchen, the chef has given the world another reminder of how she got herself into trouble in the first place. In a dedicated cover interview with People magazine, Deen stated that she identified with Michael Sam, the young football player who recently came out to the public ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.
"I feel like 'embattled' or 'disgraced' will always follow my name," Deen told the magazine. "It's like that black football player who recently came out... He said, 'I just want to be known as a football player. I don't want to be known as a gay football player.' I know exactly what he's saying."
Not surprisingly, Deen's comments can't escape being contextualized by her history of racism and very public fall from grace. Despite a highly coordinated return to the public sphere, Deen still hasn't developed enough tact to keep her foot out of her mouth.
