Frank Pepe's Celebrates 90-Year Anniversary

Frank Pepe Pizzeria has a lot to celebrate this summer.

One of the oldest and famous pizzerias in the country, Frank Pepe's (which The Daily Meal has named the best pizza in America two times running) is about to open its eighth location in Boston, celebrated its 90th birthday on June 23, and was be featured in the Food Network series "Top 5 Restaurants" in the Best Pizza Episodes, according to a press release.

The Food Network episode was featured on June 29 and interviewed Gary Bimonte, Frank Pepe's grandson, and showcased the original and historical New Haven restaurant, which opened in 1925.

And, starting July 1, Frank Pepe will release its much-anticipated Fresh Tomato Pie. The special pie is released every summer and is served daily using locally-grown tomatoes.

Frank Pepe's is now run by Pepe's seven grandchildren and still uses original recipes to make their coal-fired pizza. "Well, we've certainly come a long way. In our wildest dreams we could have never predicted what my grandfather's humble little pizza shop would amount to. The learning process along the way, the growth of the company and the brand recognition is truly amazing. We don't take anything for granted. We are truly grateful," Bimonte told The Daily Meal.

There are currently locations throughout Connecticut and in Yonkers, NY, and the Boston location is slated to open this fall. The pizzeria will remain open throughout the Fourth of July weekend.

In addition to releasing The Daily Meal's annual list of the 101 Best Pizzas in America, this year, we're inviting readers and pizza-lovers everywhere to chime in with their opinions. If you're a Frank Pepe fan, be sure to cast a vote for them in our pizza survey!
