Lidl Milk Goes GMO-Free
The cows that provide milk and cheese for the store brand dairy products at Lidl grocery stores around Germany are about to go on a new diet, as the chain just announced that its store-brand milk was about to go GMO-free.
According to The Local, Milbona is Lidl's house brand, and milk under that label will be certified GM-free this week. Milbona cheese will follow in September.
Genetically modified corn and grain can be used for animal feed in the E.U., but it cannot be grown there. An increasing number of grocery stores are insisting that the animals providing store brand eggs and poultry be fed non-GMO feed, but Lidl is the first German grocery to have its store-branded milk certified to be free of genetically modified products.
Lidl says the "GM-free" certification does not mean the milk will be getting more expensive. It will still be around 51 cents per liter in stores.
