The 25 Most Popular Halloween Candies In America

Trick-or-treating is a beloved childhood tradition, and when kids dig through their pillowcase or plastic pumpkin after a long day of going door-to-door, it seems like everything in there is a treat. But with Halloween just around the corner, we wondered: What are the most popular Halloween candies in America?

In order to rank the most popular candies for this year, we got in touch with CandyStore.com. They used their own private sales data and also worked with industry distribution partners to determine the top candies in every state from the last 12 years. They then took the data of the top three candies from every state and calculated a weighted average to determine the top-selling candies in America during the Halloween holiday season. What are the candies that are a sure bet to show up in your (or your kids') possession? You may be surprised to find out.

#25 Milk Duds

Milk Duds are no dud come Halloween season. This favorite movie theater snack gets packaged in adorable little boxes of three or four and is then given out to tens of thousands of trick-or-treaters. Roughly 9,732 pounds of these chocolate-covered caramels are sold during Halloween.

#24 Life Savers

You may not know it, but Life Savers are among the snack foods that have been around for over a century. An oldie but a goodie, an average of 11,987 pounds of Life Savers are sold for the holiday.

#23 Almond Joy

Sometimes you feel like a nut, and sometimes you don't. But hundreds of thousands of trick-or-treaters will get nutty this Halloween; it's estimated that 32,744 pounds of Almond Joys are sold on average. Almond Joys apparently sell much better than their nut-free counterpart as Mounds didn't even crack the top 25.

#22 3 Musketeers

Did you know that from 1932 to 1945, each package of 3 Musketeers contained three different-flavored pieces: chocolate, strawberry and vanilla? It's true. Also true: 93,227 pounds of 3 Musketeers are sold on average for Halloween, proving that people love these whipped chocolate delights.

#21 Lemonheads

You may not think of these tart yet sweet little candies all that often, but they will show up in your plastic pumpkin. An average of around 112,883 pounds of Lemonheads will be bought this Halloween.

#20 Blow Pops

Charms Blow Pops are lollipops with bubblegum centers, making them the ultimate two-in-one candy. What could be better than that? Not much, because this iconic treat is super popular; about 256,916 pounds of this treat are sold for Halloween.

#19 Dubble Bubble

Dubble Bubble, those little barrels of super-chewable bubblegum, is hugely popular. How popular, you ask? Nearly 150,000 pounds of this sugary treat are sold for the fall.

#18 Kit Kat

Break me off a piece of this fun fact: 172,663 pounds of Kit Kats are sold on average every Halloween, making them the 18th most popular candy. The Kit Kats in kids' Halloween baskets may actually look a little different this year. Not only does the packaging glow in the dark, but Kit Kat also has a new flavor in 2019: Mint Chocolate Duos.

#17 Twix

Twix, which traditionally comes in a two-stick pack, was introduced by Mars in the U.K. in 1967 and came to the U.S. in 1979. Since then, this caramel, cookie and chocolate concoction has become a major favorite of the young and young at heart. Around 198,777 pounds of fun-sized (and normal-sized) Twix have been at Halloween over the past 12 years. No matter how you pronounce it, that is a lot of caramel.

#16 Swedish Fish

What flavor are Swedish Fish exactly? We're not actually sure (it's rumored to be lingonberry), but regardless of what that sweet, fruity taste is, trick-or-treaters love Swedish Fish. About 202,000 pounds of these little swimmers dive into Halloween buckets and bags each holiday season.

#15 Milky Way

You don't have to go to outer space to get a Milky Way this Halloween, just go around the block. As long as you follow trick-or-treating etiquette, someone will give this 15th most popular Halloween candy to you. About 282,111 pounds of Milky Ways typically make their way to trick-or-treaters this holiday season.

#14 Hershey’s Mini Bars

Often imitated but never duplicated, Hershey's is the iconic chocolate bar in America. How much do people love this sweet milk chocolate? A lot. 377,893 pounds of Hershey's minis — a mix of Hershey's bars, Hershey's Special Dark, Krackel and Mr. Goodbar — alone are purchased for the season on average.

#13 Taffy

Taffy? At No. 13? Yes, this classic boardwalk food is a Halloween standard, thanks in no small part to Laffy Taffy. The Willy Wonka-branded taffy debuted in the 1970s and is now a must-have for trick-or-treaters; about 385,000 pounds of taffy is sold each Halloween.

#12 Butterfinger

Butterfinger has a new recipe this Halloween, but even though the taste and texture is different this year, Butterfingers have been a favorite for some time. 388,891 pounds of these crispy, crunchy peanut butter chocolate candies are sold each year for Halloween.

#11 Jolly Ranchers

One Jolly Rancher weighs roughly 6 grams, so it's crazy to think that about 950,000 pounds of these tiny hard candies are purchased for the Halloween season. That's the equivalent of 7 million hard candies. These fruity treats are easy to buy in bulk and hand out to trick-or-treaters en masse.

#10 Hershey’s Kisses

Did you know that over 70 million Hershey's Kisses are produced every day? It seems as though Hershey will have to sustain that volume to keep up with the Halloween demand. These fan-favorite chocolate drops are the first candy to crack over 1 million pounds sold on average each Halloween, starting off the top 10 with a kiss.

#9 Sour Patch Kids

Sour Patch Kids may be little troublemakers, but there's no trick in this treat. These tart little gummies are hugely popular on Halloween. Nearly 1.1 million pounds of these frisky, fruity candies are sold each Halloween.

#8 Tootsie Pops

The genius concept of putting Tootsie Rolls into lollipops came to fruition in 1931, and since then, this fruity and chocolaty combination has become a complete and total sensation. How sensational? Well, just ask the folks who contribute to the 1.2 million pounds of these sold on average for Halloween.

#7 Hot Tamales

If you're a big fan of spicy candy, then you're in luck. Hot Tamales, those little red hot cinnamon-flavored chewy candies with a soft shell, are hugely popular for Halloween. About 1.3 million pounds are sold every Halloween.

#6 Candy Corn

Whether you love or hate candy corn, you can't deny this striped confection is synonymous with the fall season and Halloween. This divisive candy sits just outside the top five most popular treats, with over 1.3 million pounds sold on average each Halloween.

#5 Starburst

This chewy, fruity candy that leaves your mouth watering was originally called Opal Fruit when it launched in Britain in 1960. But now we know and love them as Starburst. 1.6 million pounds of Starburst are bought on average each Halloween.

#4 Snickers

Snickers combines nougat, caramel, peanuts, and chocolate to create a chewy, tasty candy bar that is beloved across the country. Trick-or-treaters will likely get their fill this Halloween season, thanks to the almost 2 million pounds sold on average.

#3 M&M’s

Is there any candy more classic than M&M's? Whether they're peanut, caramel, crispy or plain, these little chocolate buttons are everywhere for the Halloween season; 2.2 million pounds are bought for the holiday every year.

#2 Reese’s

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, in mini form and in pumpkin and bat shapes, may be the most beloved Halloween candy, but it's only the second-most sold. About 3 million pounds are sold each year in anticipation of the spookiest night of the year.

#1 Skittles

Though Skittles first debuted in the 1980s, they are more popular today than ever before. They're also the top-selling candy, with 3.3 million pounds sold on average, which is a ton of fruit flavor. And while Skittles reign supreme as the most popular Halloween candy of the 2010s, the most popular Halloween candies of the last 80 years were a lot different.
