Let Your Kids Eat These 9 Candies – They Aren't As Bad As You Think
Similar to any other junk food, there are certain candies that are better for you than others. We analyzed the nutrition information of the popular Halloween candies and selected the best options in terms of calories, fat, and sugar. We also spoke with Timothy Chase, DMD, cosmetic dentist and practicing partner at SmilesNY about the best and worst candies for your child's pearly whites.
Almond Joy
When it comes to chocolate candy, it helps to have added protein, such as almonds, to keep you full and prevent you from unwrapping three more. The snack-size candies total about 80 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and eight grams of sugar. Try making the healthier version of Almond Joys, made with real coconut, coconut sugar, bittersweet chocolate, and roasted almonds.
Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
Somewhat similar to your beloved Reese's, Justin's Peanut Butter Cups have a nutritionist-approved ingredient list. The ingredients include organic dark chocolate, organic peanuts, organic cane sugar, organic peanut flour, organic cocoa butter, organic vanilla flavor, sea salt, and organic soy lecithin. At 230 calories, you get four grams of protein, 14 grams of fat, and 17 grams sugar.
Kit Kat
Don't feel guilty about breaking off a piece of that Kit Kat bar. Due to the crunchy center, one two-piece bar has only 70 calories, 3.6 grams of fat, and about nine grams of sugar.
Peanut M&M’s
Even though you may have no problem eating a fun size bag of these, choosing the snack size will put you at only 90 calories, five grams of fat, and nine grams of sugar. A little protein and healthy fats from the peanuts also never hurts.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
The ingredients may not be organic, but they are very similar to our friend Justin's Peanut Butter Cups. The best part about the Reese's brand is that you can buy the miniatures and have three pieces for a little over 100 calories, less than 14 grams of sugar, and less than 10 grams of fat.
Snickers Miniatures
The best part about Snickers Minis is that you can satisfy your chewy, chocolate cravings instantly. Two of these clock in at 85 calories, four grams of fat, and nine grams of sugar.
Twizzlers
Twizzlers are the only fruity candy to make this list, but they have just 0.5 grams of fat and nine grams of sugar. You can have two for less than 100 calories. Be sure to floss after because chewy candy loves to stick to your pearly whites.
UnReal Candy Coated Milk Chocolates
UnReal markets its candy as non-GMO, gluten-free, corn-free, and soy-free. This candy lands at the top for the healthiest because it uses no artificial dyes, but instead, colors from fruits and vegetables such as red cabbage juice, beet juice, and turmeric extract. These are basically like M&M's straight from nature. For under 100 calories, you can have 25 pieces, with 5 grams of fat and 9.5 grams of sugar.
UnReal Dark Chocolate Crispy Quinoa Peanut Butter Cups
Who needs a Crunch bar made with rice when you can get UnReal Crispy Peanut Butter Cups made with quinoa? No artificial ingredients and your dose of whole-grains comes to you in a delicious chocolate candy. Two cups are 170 calories, 11 grams of fat, and 12 grams of sugar. But how much sugar really is too much? Here's what nutritionists have to say.
