7 Restaurants To Discover In Megève, France
It's not too late to book a flight and head to one of France's most beautiful food-lover's villages, Megève, an Alpine ski resort located not far from the Swiss border. You can choose a different restaurant every night and not be disappointed, but for us these seven are sure bets.
Les Enfants Terribles
A fascinating restaurant with bold interior design choices like the mural by the inimitable artist Jean Cocteau and the ruby red carved ceiling.
Classic food with modern twists like the Caesar salad with a side of blue cheese mousse and pita chips are sublime and dessert really was a wow factor. Mille feuille filled with an espresso cream beside chocolate ice cream with pieces of fabric-like chocolate on top was everything this chocoholic desired, and then some.
Les Fermes de Marie
There are three restaurants in the hotel to chose from. While the surroundings might be old world the gastronomy is more eclectic – traditional with a modern flair – fondue and escargot, to quinoa and tabouleh. My favorite meal of the day at Les Fermes was breakfast. Guests are invited into the "kitchen" for a true farm to table experience – homemade omelets made from eggs the chickens in the coop behind the hotel lay daily.
There was a kid's section with pancakes, waffles and other goodies that I am not allowed to eat due to a wheat allergy, so imagine my delight to see an entire section devoted to gluten-free suffers like me.
Le Torrent
One of the coolest restaurants in Megève, this below ground spot is a wonderful place for a cozy dinner. Petite booths lined with fluffy wool create intimate dining spaces while other comfy spaces allow groups of friends to yuk it up.
Cheese Fondue and desserts are their specialty. Do have the profiteroles, but sharing is a must as they are huge! Don't be afraid, but you won't be going to the powder room alone. I won't ruin the surprise; let me just say I jumped out of my skin, and then cried I laughed so hard.
Beef Lodge
Le Lodge Park Hotel's restaurant is a carnivores' dream come true. Prime cuts of beef from top breeders dominate the menu and are accompanied by extraordinary sauces, Arbois wine jus, rare Madagascar peppercorn sauce, and red onion chutney to name a few.
The dining room is a hunter's paradise. Antler chandeliers and fur-trimmed curtains create a hunting lodge atmosphere. Comfortable banquettes are lined in timeless, well-worn leather. Adding a bit of entertainment to the meal, the kitchen's glass window gives diners a front row seat to observe the chefs' flame grill the meats expertly.
Le Bistrot du M
Hotel M's Le Bistrot is a cool and convivial brasserie serving good old fashion mountain gastronomy. When you want French comfort food, this is the spot. Appetizing, simple dishes and all-star service are the stars of this restaurant.
Even on the cloudiest of days, the dining room is filled with light. The entire front wall is glass and overlooks the serene pool and outside terrace, giving guests a sense that they are eating en plein air all year around. Furry chair liners add a touch of whimsy to the décor. It is a fantastic place to meet friends for a delightful casual meal.
La Petite Ravine
Skiers love to take a break from the action at La Petite Ravine for a rest and a modest hot meal in the winter. Summer hikers make their way through the flower-filled meadows to reach the patio area for a cool drink and a satisfying cheese and bread based meal. All the cheeses are sourced from local farms. Cooked meats, salads and homemade pies round out the menu.
The café-style chalet has breathtaking views of the valleys below and Mont Blanc as a magnificent backdrop.
Le 1920 Restaurant
Like the Baroness Rothschild herself, the two Michelin-star restaurant at Le 1920 is an example of unpretentious elegance. The sophisticated frescos illustrating vintage skiers enjoying après ski cocktails add a charming historical reference to a bygone era.
A soft and neutral palette for the furniture and linens allow the naturally vibrant hues of the food to supply the pops of color in the room. The cuisine is imaginative, thoughtful and absolutely stunning in its presentation. Every course by Relais & Chateaux chef Chef Julien Gataillon is flawlessly executed and the respect for fresh ingredients is apparent in every flavorful bite.
The expert sommelier helps diners choose wines from the vast international selection to pair with the menu. Not surprising, many pulled from Baron Edmond de Rothschild's wine company are frequently featured.
La Table de l'Alpaga
Only a five-minute carriage ride from downtown Megève, the light and bright Alpaga gourmet restaurant is a modern oasis amid its more traditional peers. Summer months bring outdoor dining with views of the peaks of Mont Blanc.
One Michelin-star Chef Anthony Bisquerra's dishes are complicated, but not fussy. Farm fresh ingredients are plated beautifully and are bursting with flavor since he only uses fresh produce in season.
