MAMO-Mia! MAMO New York Recap
Known to be a purveyor of affectionate Italian and Provencal dining, SoHo's MAMO, has been on my 'must-visit' hotspots to try. Under the direction of Executive (and Michelin-starred) Chef Massimo Sola, MAMO has eared well-deserved widespread acclaim. I recently had the pleasure to experience a divine meal at the exquisite location. The night started with a light, refreshing springtime margarita. Perfect for a warm evening, the libation was an ideal aperitif for the meal to come. First course was Chef's calamari special showcasing Long Island's fresh baby squid with potatoes and perfectly plump peas. All was tossed with a bit of pesto sauce to complement the ingredients natural flavors. It was then, I was assured I was in for a gastronomic thrill the rest of the night.
My next show stopping course was the Brasato di manzo con purea di patate, (braised beef with potato puree). I adore braised meats and this dish did not disappoint. The beef was tender and soft as butter and rested upon a beautiful pillow of potatoes. The knowledgeable staff expertly paired the beef with Chateau Malenguin Saint Emilian 2010. The wine carries aromas of deep black cherry boasting a mild fruity body. It's smooth tannins were as smooth as the perfectly made beef sauce, generously poured on the entrée. And, of course, most perfect meals end on a sweet note. MAMO's unique spin on chocolate moose caught my eye. Served as a red wine caramelized pear and homemade fingerling biscotti topped with a generous scoop of moose and luscious whipped cream — the reimagined interpretation was dreamy.
My wait and anticipation was well worth my visit. The unforgettable experience was indeed affectionate, warm, and above all delicious. MAMO has reignited my love and passion for wholesome and classic, with a touch of modern, Italian cuisine.
