Forgot Milk? 10 Ways To Get Same-Day Groceries Delivered Gallery
As long as grocery stores have existed, there has been grocery delivery — picture a '50s bagboy walking home with an old lady to carry her paper grocery bags — but with new technology, there are new ways to get your weekly shopping done online. Indeed, instead of walking to the store or loading up the kids in your SUV, you can now order groceries from the comfort of your couch and have someone else do the heavy lifting for you. And sometimes, you can get those groceries within hours of ordering online.
The world of online grocery shopping is rapidly expanding and changing, with no retailer wanting to be left behind in the dust while people increasingly do even their most basic shopping on the Internet. Local grocery store chains across America, such as Kroger, Publix, Von's, and Safeway, were early adopters of these more modern grocery delivery and pickup services, but they aren't necessarily same-day and they serve a smaller population. The 10 grocery delivery services listed here serve a wide population with plans to expand their services even further.
So if you forgot your milk, are looking to make a classy dinner at home for your anniversary and find yourself without steak and potatoes, or you're just too darn busy to head to the supermarket and search the aisles for that jar of Dijon mustard yourself, then consider these 10 same-day grocery delivery services.
AmazonFresh
Amazon delivers just about anything else you could ever dream of, so of course they're a leader in the same-day grocery delivery space with AmazonFresh. Amazon shoppers in select cities can sign up for AmazonFresh and shop for groceries and other everyday items like household products and beauty care items. Unfortunately, AmazonFresh is not included in Prime membership. On top of your $99 annual Prime membership, it's $12.99 a month for AmazonFresh. However, AmazonFresh isn't the only way to get quick deliveries to your door. Amazon Now will deliver you beer and wine within two hours in case you're feeling thirsty.
Costco
There are a lot of things you may not know about Costco, but did you know they offer same-day grocery delivery? Indeed, this retail giant has same-day delivery for all its fresh groceries in "most metropolitan areas" for Costco members only. The same-day service is powered by Instacart, not Costco's own shop-from-home service. However, if you're not in an area with Instacart, you can get two-day delivery directly from Costco, which is still a pretty good turnaround.
FreshDirect
Based in New York City, FreshDirect gets its produce and meats directly from farmers to its warehouse, to cut out the middleman and to get its customers fresh food quickly at a good value. FreshDirect is currently only available in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., but for those East Coast states, it offers same-day delivery service for all lifestyles and dietary restrictions, including gluten-free, kosher, and all-organic diets.
Google Express
When in doubt, you can just Google it. Google Express is an extension of Google and an app that is powered by the search engine giant and allows you to shop at Walmart, Target, Costco, Walgreens, and local stores for your groceries and other household goods. You can even use your Google Home device to order devices by talking out loud; it's just that easy. Depending on your area, same-day service and end-of-day-service are available.
InstaCart
Like many online retailers, InstaCart got its start in Silicon Valley, but the same-day grocery delivery service has now expanded to 44 states. How is it so widespread? The shoppers go to local grocery stores and essentially just do your shopping for you. If you need substitutions, your personal shopper will send you a text or call you, so you won't be getting surprise store brand yogurts in your cart when you really wanted Chobani. You can choose a two-hour window for your delivery, and for that same-day service, the delivery fee is just $5.99.
Sam’s Club
Want to get your groceries in bulk and delivered? With a Sam's Club membership, you can have exactly that. In February 2018, Sam's Club joined forces with InstaCart for same-day delivery in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and St. Louis. Delivery will come to your door in less than one hour, so you can enjoy that 72-package box of fruit snacks ASAP. Though the number of cities is limited right now, Sam's Club is hoping to expand its same-day delivery service in the coming months and years.
Shipt
Shipt is a membership-based online grocery service that operates in major metro areas in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma. A yearly Shipt membership will run customers $99 per year, or you can go month-to-month for $14. For that price, customers receive free delivery for orders over $35 from local grocery stores such as Kroger, Publix, H-E-B, and Meijer.
Target
Target has been using Shipt to deliver its groceries and other retail items for some time in select areas where Shipt operates, but get ready for this same-day delivery service to explode. Target actually acquired Shipt in December 2017 and is looking to expand its same-day delivery to nearly all of its major-market stores by 2018's holiday season. That means you can buy your Christmas ham and your holiday gifts at the same time and have them delivered to your door in one hour.
Walmart
Long before Amazon took over the world, Walmart was the superstore, so it makes sense that they got in on the same day grocery delivery game. In select markets, you can order Sam's Choice items, meat, fresh produce, and anything else Walmart has to offer and get it delivered to your door that day. Walmart is looking to expand its same-day grocery delivery service by partnering with Postmates. It's expecting to reach 800 stores by the end of the year, serving 40 percent of American households.
Whole Foods
Despite being owned by Amazon, Whole Foods' same-day grocery delivery service is powered by InstaCart, and in markets with Instacart you can get your 365 products and organic chicken delivered to you in one hour. Whole Foods and Amazon are partnered up for same-day grocery delivery in Austin, Dallas, Cincinnati, Virginia Beach, and Los Angeles. If you didn't know that about Whole Foods, you likely don't know these facts about the favorite grocery chain either.
