Blogger Spotlight: A Chick Who Can Cook
From Spooner, Wisconsin, food blogger Kayla De'Leon cooks, bakes, and eats with her awesome hubby and three beautiful daughters. She focuses on fun, family-friendly recipes and documents it all on her food blog, A Chick Who Can Cook.
She runs a tight ship and keeps her kitchen OCD-level clean. As an eater, though, De'Leon says of herself, "I am not much of a picky eater except when it comes to any kind of green veggie or tomato— my adult taste buds have not yet come to surface."
As this week's featured food blogger, we chatted with De'Leon to get to know more about her blog and her lifestyle. Check it out below:
The Daily Meal: What is the mission of your blog?
Kayla De'Leon: To provide families with easy, fun recipes that anyone can make.
How'd you get started?
I loved taking photos, writing, and, of course, cooking, so I thought I would start a food blog back in 2010. I have been slowly growing since then. I couldn't live without it even though I usually get yelled at by my family for taking photos while they are waiting to eat!
What are some foods you can't live without?
Mashed potatoes and chicken: I could live on that alone for the rest of my life.
Are there any foods you can't stand?
I really want to love asparagus, but I just can't do it
What is your proudest post?
My apple crisp; it went crazy on Pinterest and has the most views.
What is your biggest blog blunder?
Bad photos. When I first started out, the pictures were not so great, but I am currently re-doing the photos on a lot of old posts that are on there.
Do you have a memorable comment from a reader?
I do. It was my third year in and a reader wrote a paragraph on how much she loved my blog and about how she has tried more than half of my food, and that her family loved everything so far. It made my day.
What's on your cooking playlist?
"Cheap Thrills" by Sia, "Don't Let Me Down" by Daya, and "Me Too" by Meghan Trainor.
What are some other blogs you love?
Annie's Eats, Bakerella, and Bakeaholic Mama
What are some food apps you love?
Kitchen Stories, Food Network, Fooducate, Foodgawker, and Out Of Milk
What is the best thing about blogging?
Sharing my recipes and my love of food with other people — and hoping they enjoy them as much I do!
The worst thing?
Nothing I can really say... But once my computer died and I was not able to blog for a year. That was horrible. Oh, and people stealing photos. I had to deal with that once.
Is there a recipe you're currently obsessed with?
The Spinach Feta Turkey Burger with Greek tzatziki sauce.
What would even your most loyal followers be surprised to learn about you?
I am pretty much an open book; you can read about me on my blog in the "All About Me" section. I was a teen mom; that is as scandalous as I get.
