5 Foods Made Better With Everything-Bagel Seasoning
Ask any New Yorker, and most would agree that they can walk the path from their apartment to their favorite bagel shop blindfolded. It's a ritualistic activity ending with your "usual order," but that isn't to say you don't have plenty of choices: poppy seed, sesame, salt, garlic — and then there is the everything bagel. Nothing quite matches its unique combination of flavors; it's the catchall for those of us who can't choose.
In a surprising twist for anyone who was born in the '80s or later, the everything bagel was not always available everywhere. This iconic bagel variety, which combines, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, onion, garlic, and caraway seeds, came into existence in 1980, if you believe David Gussin, who claims to have invented the everything bagel by accident when he was working at a "take-out place" in Howard Beach as a teenager according to reporting in a New Yorker article from 2008. Of course, if you believe Seth Godin, who worked in a factory in Buffalo producing everything bagels in 1977, then Gussin's story falls flat.
Either way, the everything bagel, and its everything taste has made its mark on our taste buds, most recently reinvented as the everything doughnut at New York City's The Doughnut Project, known for quirky flavor combinations like beet ricotta and olive oil and black pepper doughnuts. This unusual sweet and savory twist got us thinking, what else can you season with the everything bagel topping?
