Win A Free Lobster Roll At Luke's Lobster On June 15 If You Wear A Canadian Tuxedo
D.C.'s favorite Maine lobster shack, Luke's Lobster, is celebrating "Canadian National Lobster Day" by giving away free lobster rolls to the first 15 customers who wear a "Canadian Tuxedo" when they visit three of the District's seafood restaurants.
This tuxedo is part of Luke's Lobster campaign to educate Americans about Maine lobster and the true meaning of National Lobster Day. Luke's Lobster wants Americans to know the lobster they enjoy during the summer comes from Canada, that June 15 is the peak of Canada's lobster season, while in Maine summertime is the softshell season, and hard shell season doesn't begin until after Labor Day.
Luke's Lobster is a passionate advocate of Maine lobster but this abundance of Canadian lobster has caused the company to rebrand the June 15 date. According to the company, "This year we're setting the record straight and christening June 15 Canadian Lobster Day to celebrate peak lobster season in the Great White North."
For the folks at Luke's Lobster the National Lobster Day celebrated on September 25, which occurs during Maine's peak lobster season, is the only legit American holiday because it was established by a U.S. Senate resolution in 2017. They believe the other National Lobster Day is simply a "made-up-internet" celebration that should be renamed so people know where they're lobster really comes from. Not that there's anything wrong with Canadian lobster, it's delicious, but it's not Maine lobster; and that's worth talking about.
So is the Canadian Tuxedo real or made up? It's real thanks to Bing Crosby. According to urban legend, back in 1951, Bing Crosby was refused entrance to a fancy hotel restaurant in Vancouver because he was wearing a denim suit.
He and his denim-clad companion got a pass and eventually dined in the restaurant but the incident created a minor fashion and diplomatic dust-up and gained national attention. After hearing the story, Levi Strauss and Co. created a custom denim tuxedo jacket for Mr. Crosby that he could wear anywhere without fear of being rejected for being improperly attired. His double-breasted denim jacket with the wide lapels became an iconic wardrobe staple for Mr. Crosby and he proudly wore it for years, without rejection, in fancy restaurants, at public appearances, and even on film.
Unfazed, Canadians have made the tuxedo a beloved national symbol and they wear the Canadian Tuxedo with pride. If you have a Canadian Tuxedo, head over to Luke's Lobster early and see if you can win a free Canadian lobster roll. Enjoy Luke's Lobster Rolls, they're wicked good!
