9 Discontinued Chick-Fil-A Items We Aren't Getting Back
Chick-fil-A has been around since 1967. Over the years, the restaurant has certainly gone through a lot of changes; the cow mascots that are now synonymous with the restaurant weren't even introduced until 1995. In addition to expanding to new locations, introducing several new menu items, and gaining a much bigger following, Chick-fil-A has also discontinued several items over the years.
Perhaps you're all-too-familiar with some of these menu departures. It can be really sad to see some of your favorite menu items disappear. There are also a few discontinued items that may surprise you. Perhaps you just assumed they were still available in the restaurants, or didn't realize that Chick-fil-A ever offered them in the first place. Read on to learn about some of the customer favorite (and not-so favorite) items that are no longer available at Chick-fil-A. Unlike the Spicy Chicken Biscuit which was brought back to the menu after being discontinued, most of these discontinued items don't appear to be slated to reappear any time soon, if ever.
1. Chicken Salad Sandwich
There are several potential ordering mistakes you could make at Chick-fil-A, and one of them is asking for a Chicken Salad Sandwich. The Chicken Salad Sandwich was removed from the menu in 2017, so you'll probably get some strange looks if you try to order it today. While it may not have rivaled the popularity of the classic Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich, there were still many loyal customers who were sad to see the Chicken Salad Sandwich removed from the menu.
If you miss the Chicken Salad Sandwich, you can make your own following the recipe Chick-fil-A shared to console distraught customers. You only need some original or grilled Chick-fil-A chicken breasts, hard-boiled eggs, celery, mayonnaise, and pickle relish. Just cube the chicken breasts and mix the ingredients together until you achieve the right consistency.
If you miss the Chicken Salad Sandwich because you thought it was one of the healthiest items on the menu, you might be excited to hear that there are other, better options. At 500 calories and 21 grams of fat, the Chicken Salad Sandwich actually wasn't all that great for you. There are other lower calorie options available today, such as the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with 390 calories and 12 grams of fat, the Chicken Noodle Soup with 170 calories and 4 grams of fat, and the eight-count Grilled Nuggets with 130 calories and 3 grams of fat.
2. Cinnamon Cluster
Many other fast food restaurants offer cinnamon rolls on their breakfast menu. While Chick-fil-A does not offer any cinnamon rolls on their menu today, they used to have an item called the Cinnamon Cluster. Rather than simply being a single cinnamon roll that you could find at nearly any other restaurant, this special item featured several bite-size cinnamon rolls connected together and drizzled with sweet frosting — picture a batch of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, but on a smaller size with each roll being just the right size to pop right in your mouth.
Sadly, the Cinnamon Cluster was removed from Chick-fil-A's menu in 2016, after an 11-year run. You can no longer enjoy each sweet and heavenly bite. Chick-fil-A's current breakfast menu doesn't have a clear replacement for the Cinnamon Cluster, either. Beyond the fruit cup and the Greek Yogurt Parfait, the rest of the Chick-fil-A breakfast menu is more savory than sweet. You'll have to settle for some Chick-n-Minis, a Chicken Biscuit, a Hash Brown Scramble Burrito, a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, or the like.
3. Oatmeal
The Cinnamon Cluster wasn't the only breakfast item cut from the menu in 2016. The Multigrain Oatmeal was also shown its way to the door and is no longer available to purchase. It didn't have a very long run on the menu. It was only added as an option in 2011, lasting about five years before being cut. Chick-fil-A initially introduced the breakfast item to offer a healthier alternative to the fried sandwiches on the menu. Customers who ordered the oatmeal could choose to have it topped with dried fruit, roasted mixed nuts, or cinnamon brown sugar.
The Multigrain Oatmeal offered a lower calorie breakfast option, with just 120 calories and 2.5 grams of fat in each cup without the addition of any toppings. It was up to 290 calories and 11 grams of fat with toppings, depending on which you chose. If you were sad to see the oatmeal go, and want to find the best alternative currently available, try the Greek Yogurt Parfait. It has 270 calories and 9 grams of fat and is one of the non-fried options on the breakfast menu.
4. Asian Salad
Do you remember the Asian Salad from Chick-fil-A? The salad featured oranges, red cabbage, almonds, wonton crisps, and, of course, sliced chicken nuggets over a bed of lettuce. It was served with a Honey Sesame Dressing that offered the perfect complement to the different flavors in the salad and made you feel as if you were enjoying a brief escape to another culture.
The Asian Salad was added to the menu in 2013. It was introduced at the same time as the Cobb Salad and Grilled Market Salad. Chick-fil-A was trying to offer more upscale and unique salads that would stand up against the more expensive options their customers could find from sit-down restaurants. While the Cobb Salad and Grilled Market Salad seem to have stood the test of time, the Asian Salad only lasted for about three years before it was removed from the menu in 2016. In addition to the Cobb and Market Salads, Chick-fil-A also currently offers a Spicy Southwest Salad.
5. Carrot and Raisin Salad
While carrots and raisins may not seem like the most likely — or even appetizing — combination, the Carrot and Raisin Salad stayed on Chick-fil-A's menu for approximately 40 years. In fact, the salad was devised by Truett Cathy, the founder of the fast food restaurant. Despite the name, the Carrot and Raisin Salad also included other key ingredients that helped give it a slightly sweet and delicious (at least according to some loyal customers) taste. These other ingredients included some crushed pineapple (still in its juice), sugar, lemon juice, and mayonnaise.
The once iconic item was removed from the Chick-fil-A menu in 2013. However, there is one way you may be able to enjoy the original recipe, without trying to recreate it yourself. If you're near Atlanta, Georgia, visit either Dwarf House or Truett's Grill, the two other restaurants started by Chick-fil-A founder, Truett Cathy. If you don't live near Atlanta, you'll just have to let this item go and move on to other offerings on the menu.
6. Cole Slaw
If you enjoy a side of cole slaw with your Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich (or even as a topping), you'll have to pick it up somewhere else or make your own cole slaw. While cole slaw used to be offered as a side dish on the menu, it was removed in 2016. Believe it or not, the side dish had been available for nearly 50 years before faithful customers had to say their goodbyes.
Fortunately, there are still several other side dish options available at Chick-fil-A to help you fill the void in your stomach left by the discontinuation of the cole slaw. Of course, the most popular side dish item is the waffle potato fries, but you could also choose to add a fruit cup, side salad, mac & cheese, chicken noodle soup, chicken tortilla soup, kale crunch side, Greek yogurt parfait, waffle potato chips, or apple sauce pouch to your entrée. Phew! Chick-fil-A certainly isn't lacking when it comes to side dish options. Perhaps that's why they decided it was time to say goodbye to the cole slaw.
7. Sunflower Multigrain Bagel
The Sunflower Multigrain Bagel from Chick-fil-A was another breakfast item that just wasn't making the cut. It was removed from the menu in 2021, leaving many disappointed fans in its wake. Before the bagel was discontinued, customers had the option to order it plain, with cream cheese, or as a breakfast sandwich with chicken, egg, and American cheese.
There are no other bagel options offered on Chick-fil-A's menu. However, there are several other bread or grain options for you to consider. From Chicken Biscuit Sandwiches, the Egg White Grill on an English muffin, burritos served on a tortilla, and the Chick-n-Minis on yeast rolls, Chick-fil-A does offer a lot of variety for their customers — just no more bagels. You'll have to let go of your disappointment over the loss of the Sunflower Multigrain Bagel a few years ago and find something else to help you fuel up and get ready for the day.
8. Decaf coffee
Who needs decaf coffee? A cup of the real stuff is all that matters to wake you up and get you through the day. If you disagree with this statement, and enjoy drinking decaf coffee with your breakfast or later in the day to make sure you don't keep yourself up too late, then you may have a beef to take up with Chick-fil-A. In 2021, the fast food chain decided to stop offering decaf coffee on their breakfast menu. Decaf coffee was removed at the same time as the Sunflower Multigrain Bagel, supposedly in hopes of making the breakfast menu more streamlined.
However, if you're a fan of decaf coffee, you probably don't care about making the menu more streamlined. You just want your coffee without the full amount of caffeine in a regular cup. But, alas, it just isn't going to be available at Chick-fil-A. You'll either need to switch to the full-strength stuff, try an iced coffee, have some orange juice, or opt for a sweetened or unsweetened ice tea (or half iced tea and half lemonade).
9. Dressings
Three of the dressings that used to be offered alongside the salads from Chick-fil-A are no longer available. In 2016, the restaurant bid adieu to the Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, Reduced Fat Berry Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing, and Spicy Dressing. While you may have enjoyed drizzling one of these dressings over your side or entrée salad, those days are over, and you'll have to move on.
Fortunately, Chick-fil-A didn't just get rid of the dressings without offering any alternatives for their customers. The current menu offers seven different dressing options, providing something that nearly everyone will enjoy. You can choose from Zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Creamy Salsa, Light Balsamic Vinaigrette, Light Italian, Fat-Free Honey Mustard, Garden Herb Ranch, and Avocado Lime Ranch. If you find a new favorite, you may even be able to grab a bigger bottle of it in the grocery store. Chick-fil-A recently announced that they would be putting 12-ounce bottles of Garden Herb Ranch, Avocado Lime Ranch, Creamy Salsa, and Zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette dressings on grocery store shelves.
