What Does Camel Meat Taste Like, And How Is It Prepared?

When you think of a hearty, meaty dinner, camel probably isn't one protein that immediately springs to mind. Though it may not be something that is commonly consumed in the United States, camel meat is actually something of a delicacy in the Middle East and Northeast Africa. However, the meat is typically reserved for special occasions and big celebrations — like weddings or important parties.

In addition to being a symbol of something exciting, camel meat may actually be healthier to eat than other meats, too. It is high in protein, omega-3s, and a variety of vitamins, while simultaneously being low in fat and cholesterol. However, since camels aren't found in North America, you're significantly less likely to find camel meat on the menu the next time you dine out at your favorite restaurant — though there are online options.

How is it used, and what does it taste like?

Camel meat is generally halal, meaning it is usually prepared in a specific way that adheres to Islamic guidelines. Chef Anissa Helou told The Guardian, "In Syria and Cairo there are specialist camel butchers, while in the Gulf, camel meat is eaten at parties and wedding receptions." The flavor of the protein is reportedly mild but comparable to that of beef, lamb, or veal. Veal is made from younger bovine, and although camel meat doesn't always come from younger animals, it may make a difference.

The age of the camel — as well as where the meat comes from — also matters when it comes to taste. The younger a camel is, the more moist the meat will be. Helou says meat from older camels is "dry and tough."  Additionally, the fatty, tender humps — which don't actually store water, despite the popular rumor — tend to be the most sought-after cuts of meat.

You can buy camel meat to cook at home

If you want to try camel meat for yourself, you aren't likely to find it in your typical grocery store. While you may be able to find some in specialty food stores, particularly those that carry a lot of Middle Eastern products, you can also order camel meat online — just don't expect it to be cheap.

One eBay listing has a single can listed for $38. Exotic Meat Market has a few more options, ranging from $15 for some camel sausages all the way up to $800 for 40 pounds of ground camel meat.

The best way to cook camel meat is to slow roast it after allowing it to marinate. Since the meat is generally fairly tough, slow roasting it until well done can help it cook to a more pleasant, tender consistency. And because the meat is generally expensive, it may be best to stick true to tradition and reserve your camel meat-focused meals for fancier dinner parties or weddings.
