12 Tillamook Ice Cream Flavors, Ranked
When it comes to dairy products, Tillamook is a company to reckon with. Based in the town of Tillamook, Oregon, the company produces high-quality cheese and ice cream products that are shipped all around the country, and fans cannot get enough. Over the years, Tillamook has come out with some beloved ice cream flavors, from classics like chocolate and vanilla to more unique varieties like Marionberry Pie and Mountain Huckleberry.
With so many choices in the frozen foods aisle, you may be wondering what pint of Tillamook ice cream is worth buying. While we wish we had freezers at home large enough to hold every flavor of ice cream imaginable, we have to use at least a little bit of discretion when buying dessert. That is why we sat down and researched the most talked-about Tillamook flavors, for better or for worse. We then compiled this list of 12 Tillamook flavors, ranked, so you know what to keep your eyes peeled for the next time you head to the grocery store.
1. White Chocolate Raspberry
There had to be a flavor in last place, and it happens to be Tillamook's White Chocolate Raspberry. Tillamook's website claims that the flavor is "Red, white, and delicious all over," but that description might take some liberties. According to a study from You Gov America, white chocolate is by far the least preferred form of chocolate when compared to its milk and dark counterparts.
While we're at it, let's address the elephant in the room: White chocolate is not actually chocolate. Just because it's made using cocoa butter, milk, and sugar, there's a lack of cacao nibs, so one cannot really classify white chocolate the same way as milk chocolate or dark chocolate. In the case of Tillamook's variety, Cocoa Butter is the only trace of chocolate to be found in its ingredients, and it's pretty far down the list.
Add in the fact that raspberries are not even technically berries, and this entire pint of ice cream feels like one giant lie. Raspberry is commonly paired with chocolate for a nice balance of sweet and tart, though we cannot help but wonder if we are missing out on a potentially better combination of ingredients. Or, at the very least, include fresh raspberries rather than a "ripple" of a raspberry puree, as listed in its ingredients. We are sure there's an audience for this flavor, but when compared to other Tillamook ice creams, this one feels a bit more artificial than the others.
2. French Vanilla
Sometimes the simplest ice cream flavors are the best kind if made well. Believe it or not, vanilla ice cream can be more than just, well, plain old "vanilla." Vanilla can be a rich and sophisticated flavor, which is why Tillamook's French Vanilla earns a decent spot in our ranking.
French vanilla ice cream does not get its name from the fact that vanilla is an ingredient derived from France (the ingredient is actually harvested elsewhere). Rather, it gets the French moniker from the egg yolk added to the vanilla ice cream, with the end result more closely resembling a French version of custard known as crème pâtissiere. The custard flavor of French Vanilla may be a bit too rich for some to handle, especially when that pint of ice cream is one-note. So when it comes to ranking Tillamook ice cream, its French vanilla is perhaps the weakest showing of vanilla varieties, with a much stronger showing from its Vanilla Bean flavor.
3. Banana Split
It's time to head down to the local soda shop to hand our hard-earned nickels to the soda jerk for a tasty Banana Split. Oh wait, sorry, the 1950s called and said it wants its sundae back. Jokes aside, it is actually impressive that we are still enjoying an ice cream dish that has been around for over 100 years, and to this day Tillamook sells its own version of Banana Split, which includes a mixture of vanilla and strawberry banana ice creams, walnuts, cherries, and a fudge ripple. But if you give those ingredients a once-over, you may start to see our issue with this flavor.
For a Banana Split, there seems to be a lot of preference for other fruit flavors, notably strawberry and cherry. That is not to say you cannot reinvent the Banana Split wheel every now and then, but one would think that vanilla and banana would be the two flavors that stand out the most, and strawberry and cherry are both much stronger, more overpowering fruits that you might not expect. You are probably better off buying a regular tub of vanilla ice cream and some fresh bananas to make your own Banana Split — at least then you will get the nutritional benefits from the fruit.
4. Butter Pecan
Butter Pecan is one of those hotly debated flavors that you either love or hate — there seems to be very little gray area with this particular flavor of ice cream. It is the ultimate marriage of sweet and salty, as well as creamy and crunchy, with rich ice cream paired with lightly salted pecans.
As yummy as Butter Pecan sounds, it seems to befuddle quite a few people, with Redditors arguing over what exactly Butter Pecan ice cream even is in the first place. And if you have to argue over the basic foundations of what entails a certain flavor, is it really worth writing home about? Whether or not it is any good is almost secondary to an agreed-upon baseline definition of what it is you are eating. Even Tillamook's website is vague, noting that its Butter Pecan flavor is made with "rich, buttery ice cream." Well, what flavor of ice cream is it, Tillamook? They could end this debate once and for all, yet they decide to perpetuate the shrouded mystery that is Butter Pecan.
The fans that do seem to have a firm grasp on what Butter Pecan is appear disappointed by Tillamook's take on the flavor. With an average 3.5 star rating on Walmart's website, reviews note that "This ice cream doesn't taste bad — just not like Butter Pecan!"
5. Chocolate Peanut Butter
Depending on who you ask, Tillamook's Chocolate Peanut Butter may very well be the flavor combination to end all other flavor combinations. Just like how Reese's Peanut Butter Cups rank high among Halloween candies, Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream is likely a top choice for many. Who can argue with chocolate ice cream paired with a peanut butter swirl? Well, turns out there are just as many individuals out there who would be quite happy to never have to eat that flavor combination as long as they live. The internet seems quite split on the topic, in fact, according to a score of Redditors arguing over whether the classic flavor combination is any good.
Yet Tillamook has even begun to expand on its chocolate and peanut butter category, offering a newer Campfire Peanut Butter Cup flavor with toasted marshmallow ice cream. So, there is definitely an audience for Chocolate Peanut Butter and its derivatives. YouTube personalities Rhett and Link actually selected Chocolate Peanut Butter as their number three choice for the top Tillamook flavor on their Good Mythical Morning channel, actually losing to two fruit-based flavors. This led to one Redditor pointing out that Chocolate Peanut Butter is "not really Tillamook's strong suit," and that there are better versions of this flavor from competing ice cream brands on the market.
6. Peaches and Cream
If you like peaches, then you will love this next flavor from Tillamook: Peaches and Cream. It is basically peaches on peaches on peaches, with "sweet peach ice cream with ripe peach pieces and a peach swirl." The triple peach punch is quite a lot to handle, so loving peach is sort of a prerequisite to enjoying this flavor. One Redditor likened the ice cream to the Peach milkshake at Chick-fil-A. Depending on where you live in the United States, the love for Peaches and Cream ice cream may or may not be a total surprise. Peach is one of the more popular ice cream flavors in the South, so, for Southerners, this flavor may essentially be a pint's worth of childhood nostalgia in your frozen food aisle. In fact, YouTube stars Rhett and Link of Good Mythical Morning chose Peaches and Cream as their favorite Tillamook ice cream flavor based on the fact that it reminded them of growing up in North Carolina.
In general, Tillamook fans on Reddit seem to be in agreement that this is one flavor worth buying. Sticking with the creamy fruit flavors, Tillamook has recently expanded to include an Orange and Cream flavor as well.
7. Cookies and Cream
Oreo fans, rejoice: Tillamook makes a mean Cookies and Cream ice cream. What makes this Cookies and Cream a little different from the competition is that it uses French Vanilla ice cream as its base, mixing in cookie pieces for a nice crunch. While French Vanilla by itself is ranked lower on our list, when you add in some extra ingredients, you create an entirely different concoction worthy of a respectable spot on our list.
Cookies and Cream aficionados take to Tillamook's version above others, as seen on the internet. A couple of fans took to Reddit to support Tillamook, noting that the company makes "some excellent dairy products." While other cookies and cream varieties may receive low marks for a bland flavor or tiny cookie pieces that might as well be chocolate chip ice cream, Tillamook proves once again that they know a thing or two about making quality ice cream. Another review on Kroger's website notes that because of the creamy texture of Tillamook's Cookies and Cream, they "never get any other brand." Other reviews point out how they wished the cookie-to-cream ratio was skewed slightly higher in the direction of cookies — as one reviewer on Kroger's site put it, "I want COOKIES and Cream, not Cookie DUST and Cream." Other Tillamook flavors that rank higher on our list did not seem to get similar critiques.
8. Chocolate
Sometimes it is best to stick with the classics, and that is certainly the case with Tillamook's Chocolate ice cream. The company argues that its take on this iconic flavor is among the creamier ones you will find on the market, and fans seem to agree. In fact, it's that creamy consistency that helped Tillamook's Chocolate land first place on Mashed's ranking of top grocery store chocolate ice creams.
But what is it about Chocolate that ranks it higher than other ice cream flavors that have a lot more to offer in terms of variety of ingredients and textures? As it turns out, the answer may be found in science. That creamy consistency is actually one of the reasons there are so many chocolate fans out there, so when a brand delivers on that creaminess, people take notice. Of course, it helps that many chocolate products contain enough sugar to satiate your sweet tooth — but you do not have to remind us as we enjoy our bowl of ice cream.
9. Marionberry Pie
Some of Tillamook's best flavors are ones that you would not expect, due in part to the fact that its ingredients are more unfamiliar depending on where you live. For starters, what exactly is a marionberry? The blackberry-adjacent fruit originated in Oregon, where it is often used in jams, pies, and you guessed it, ice cream. You can even take the juice from a marionberry and freeze it to make the state's iconic frozen popsicles. Those same Oregon marionberries found their way into Tillamook's frozen dessert, and fans in and out of the state cannot get enough.
As one local Oregonian said on Reddit, "Everything marionberry is delicious," so that logic certainly extends to Tillamook's Marionberry Pie. Another fan noted on Reddit that Tillamook's Marionberry Pie "is a perfect ice cream," thanks to the brand's signature creamy texture and balance of sweet and tart. Throw in some pie crust pieces and it feels like you are enjoying a fresh slice of marionberry pie, if only someone had just flash-frozen it before serving.
10. Mint Chocolate Chip
Just like Thin Mints are often heralded as the top Girl Scout Cookie flavor, Mint Chocolate Chip has a fierce following of loyal fans ready to die on the hill that it is the top ice cream flavor on the market. Tillamook's Mint Chocolate Chip mixes "rich, fudgy chips" with crisp and cool mint ice cream for the ultimate classic combo. The ice cream likely feels minty enough to trick you into thinking you are brushing your teeth, but in reality, the sugar content is doing the exact opposite.
Tillamook scores huge points on its commitment to quality ingredients, and that really shines through in its Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. That is because you will not find any artificial colors that turn ice cream that signature shade of mint green. One Reddit user pointed this out, confused that their ice cream was not green. A comment noted that "Real mint ice cream isn't green," and many suggested adding a few drops of green food dye if it was bothering them so much. But if you ask us, it is refreshing to see mint ice cream without the added artificial coloring. Good on you, Tillamook.
11. Caramel Toffee Crunch
If there is one flavor combo that is sure to rile up a fan base, it is caramel and toffee. The two ingredients are actually quite similar, with the major distinction being the cooking temperature required to make them. This results in toffee being more of a hard candy, while caramel is a softer, more gooey treat. Thankfully, Tillamook has whipped together a Caramel Toffee Crunch ice cream for the ultimate marriage of soft and crispy, and sweet and salty. The ice cream also contains pecans and almonds for an extra crunch.
One Tillamook ice cream fan mentioned on Reddit that their top choice of flavor is the Caramel Toffee Crunch, adding a shout-out to Tillamook saying that they "appreciate their variety of interesting flavors." They then called on more ice cream companies to step up to the plate and deliver on more unique flavors. There are plenty of high-quality vanillas and chocolates out there, so let's see some more innovation. Be more like Tillamook!
12. Tillamook Mudslide
Amongst a sea of tough competition, one Tillamook flavor had to rise to the top as our number one flavor currently available in grocery stores. As we compared flavors, one in particular kept popping up as the top choice for fans, and it quickly became clear: Tillamook Mudslide is all that and a bag of chips.
The ice cream is made with chocolate ice cream with a ripple of fudge and chocolate chips mixed through. It is basically a triple punch of all things chocolate. While its namesake usually refers to a boozy dessert beverage, this mudslide is appropriate for chocolate fans of all ages.
One Redditor mentioned that the Tillamook Mudslide is their favorite ice cream flavor from the company, while another noted that "one needs to really like chocolate to enjoy it, but that's a challenge I'll handily meet." True, the chocolate-on-chocolate-on-chocolate recipe might be a bit much for some, but since when was Tillamook one to hold back on flavor? This ice cream might require a prerequisite for liking chocolate, but if you fit the bill, get ready to stock up on this flavor the next time you are in the grocery store.
