Where Is The Frozen Farmer From Shark Tank Today?
Due to recent consumer trends, one cannot help but wonder whether or not a certain dairy dessert chant still holds water — do we all actually scream for ice cream? In short, the answer is yes. In 2022, the average U.S. citizen scarfed down 20 pounds of the stuff.
However, given the fact that 68% of the population likely suffers from some level of lactose sensitivity, downing scoop after scoop of ice cream isn't always an option. There's a reason global sales of dairy alternatives are in excess of $20 billion annually.
According to some nutritionists, alternative milk ice cream isn't worth it, as it can have more fat and calories than the original dairy product. However, there is another frozen dessert on the table. Sorbet is a potentially healthier dessert made from fruit juice. The Frozen Farmer, an up-and-coming sorbet brand, brought their delicious pints of fresh frozen fruit on "Shark Tank." Were the carnivorous Sharks satiated by mangoes and melons?
The Frozen Farmer serves the Sharks sorbet
Katey Evans, founder of The Frozen Farmer, is no stranger to the field, both literally and figuratively. Her family has owned and operated Evans Farms for three generations. If you grow up working on a farm, you'll inevitably notice that a lot of damaged, discolored, or otherwise ugly pieces or produce are going to waste. The Frozen Farmer uses this forgotten fruit to make sorbet and ice cream. (Hungry Harvest, another "Shark Tank" alum, sells similarly dinged up fruits and vegetables.)
Evans appeared on Season 11, episode 17 of "Shark Tank." She asked for a modest investment of $125,000, which would come with a 20% share of The Frozen Farmer. An increasingly emotional Evans saw several Sharks reject her pitch.
Daymond John explained his long-standing aversion to the frozen food industry, which he feels is limited by shipping considerations. Mark Cuban brought up similar issues with scaling. However, Lori Greiner saw promise in Evans' sorbet and offered the full $125,000 for a 30% stake, though she insisted that The Frozen Farmer change its pint packaging.
Has The Frozen Farmer found success after Shark Tank?
The Frozen Farmer apparently listened to the stern words of Lori Greiner, because its packaging has been overhauled since founder Katey Evans appeared on "Shark Tank." The new pint containers are more colorful and feature images of fruit in a prominent position. Additionally, The Frozen Farmer's website now states that the sorbet is "crafted from misfit fruit," which was inspired by a potential rebrand that Greiner floated during the negotiations.
Though The Frozen Farmer certainly values Greiner's investment, it's far from the only deal the company is involved in. Shortly after "Shark Tank," it earned $2.5 million in credit from WSFS Bank. The Frozen Farmer has partnerships with both Jimmie Allen, a Grammy-winning country music sensation, as well as Kroger's racing team. During the 2022 NASCAR series, driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. raced a Camaro sponsored by the sorbet.
In 2021, Evans returned to "Shark Tank" and told the Sharks that The Frozen Farmer had exceeded $1 million in sales. During the return visit, Greiner noted that Evans is likely one of the hardest-working people with whom she's ever worked.
