Are You Brave Enough To Try Mythical Kitchen's 'Maine Pizza'?

Mythical Kitchen is hosted by chefs Josh Scherer, Nicole Enayati, Vianai Austin, Lily Cousins, and Trevor Evarts. The chefs host friendly competitions to see who can cook the best dish, share tips for creating great meals, and even demonstrate cooking up some creative recipes, like a Takis-crusted grilled cheese sandwich. However, the team also shares some more outrageous recipes — like a ten-times-breaded piece of fried chicken or short ribs deglazed by a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte.

In one recent video posted by the channel, Scherer demonstrated how to make a "Bangor-style pizza." Though several cities have their distinct pizza styles — like Chicago's deep dish, New York's thin crust slices, and Detroit's thick crust — Bangor, Maine isn't typically brought up in pizza discussions. So in the video, as Scherer walked through each step of the creation of the dish, plenty of viewers were left confused about the origins of the dish.

The pizza has some unusual toppings

In a video posted to the Mythical Kitchen TikTok account, Scherer shared the components of a "Maine pizza." Scherer states that the pizza starts with an unleavened pizza crust base. It is then topped with sliced white American cheese and white sauce. He uses vanilla Greek yogurt, which he spreads across the cheese and base.

Then, he adds pieces of lobster tail and claw meat on top of the spread. After adding mozzarella cheese on top, the pizza bakes for 16 minutes at 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once the pizza is taken out of the oven, Scherer tops it off with maple syrup and crushed peanuts — toppings that Scherer claims are in homage to the lumber industry of Bangor, Maine. "You wouldn't think it works, but, it's truly incredible," he said while eating a piece.

Though most pizza is cut into triangles, this style is typically served in squares.

This recipe is actually completely made up

Although Chef Scherer said he liked the pizza, commenters on the TikTok video were suspicious regarding its very existence. One user, Robert Shaw, wrote, "I'm from Maine and I'm certain this doesn't exist." Caleb Sension commented, "Bangor is my hometown and I've never heard of this."

Despite the somewhat serious, educational tone of the video, many commenters were quick to point out that this pizza isn't a specialty of Maine, and it doesn't even exist. "He does these a lot but he's so serious no one knows whether he's joking or not," wrote TikTok user Tart. "The way I believed this with my whole heart until I opened the comments," wrote user Alkahest. They called out the chef's trick, saying "You have a responsibility, Joshua."

While this pizza may not be a traditional dish of Bangor, Maine, the attention from this video may inspire others to recreate the recipe at home and try it for themselves.
