Where Is The Pizza Cupcake From Shark Tank Today?
In September 2015, Italian-born Chef Andrea Meggiato asked his future wife, Michelle Jimenez, to make pizza with him on their first date in New York City. As their relationship blossomed, so did Meggiato's passion for the culinary arts. Jimenez inspired him to pursue food full-time, and The Pizza Cupcake was born in January 2018. The cupcake-shaped snack features a flaky crust made from a combination of brioche dough and sourdough, surrounding tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.
The company became so popular, that couple even postponed their honeymoon in November 2018 after getting a call from the Smorgasburg food market. The company continued making bigger sales, often catering to corporate events. The Pizza Cupcake gained a more permanent location in the form of a concession stand at Citi Field in April 2019. Mariah Carey even highlighted the company on her Instagram, dubbing Meggiato the "King of Pizza Cupcake" as he showed her how to make the snacks alongside Dev Hynes.
The couple wanted to continue to promote the products and expand the business, so they took their pitch to "Shark Tank," hoping to find an investor.
The duo wanted to expand the business
In Season 12, Episode 13 of "Shark Tank," Andrea and Michelle Meggiato approached the Sharks seeking a $125,000 investment for 5% ownership of the company. The duo even brought a pizza cupcake mascot to dance around, entertaining the Sharks while they sampled the snacks.
The Meggiatos said they shifted to an ecommerce focus with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and wanted to continue shipping products nationwide. Kevin O'Leary was concerned about shipping challenges, so he decided to go out. Daymond John was unsure if he was the right fit for the company, so he went out as well, saying it was in their best interest. Robert Herjavec called the company "the real deal" but agreed they could get a better offer, so he was out, too. Lori Greiner jumped in to make an offer, suggesting expanding the business into grocery stores, before offering the full $125,000 in exchange for 20% of the company. The business owners were hesitant and turned to Mark Cuban. He advised them to work with Greiner, and went out.
Michelle countered with 10%, stating that 20% was too high for them. Greiner insisted she would be doing a lot of work with regards to distribution, and said her bottom line would be 15%. The business owners continued negotiations for a few minutes before eventually coming to an agreement. Greiner would provide the $125,000 in exchange for a 12.5% stake, as well as 2.5% in advisory shares.
The products can now be found in stores nationwide
After sealing the deal with Lori Greiner — who Michelle Meggiato called their "dream Shark" on the show — The Pizza Cupcake found even more success by branching into retail sales. By November 2021, its products were sold in select Northeast American grocery stores. The bite-sized snacks are baked in Brooklyn, New York before being frozen, packed, and shipped across the country. They can then be reheated in the oven or air fryer and enjoyed.
In February 2022, The Pizza Cupcake landed a collaboration with celebrity chef Chrissy Teigen. The duo released the limited-edition "Chrissy's Margherita" flavor, adding fresh mozzarella and chili flakes to the snacks for a slightly spicy variation.
As of September 2022, The Pizza Cupcake's products can be found in more than 1,900 grocery stores across the United States, including Whole Foods and Wegmans, as well as hundreds of Walmart locations. The brand sells two flavors of frozen pizza cupcakes: classic pepperoni and Margherita. Fans can also order directly from The Pizza Cupcake website.
