Costco Japan's Food Court Offerings Include A Bucket Of Chicken Nuggets
If you find yourself frequently buying food in bulk, chances are you've visited a Costco Wholesale store. The chain has 848 locations worldwide, providing discounts to its 120.9 million cardholding members, no matter where in the world they shop. Membership cards will get you into any Costco locations, even outside of your home country.
After a long shopping trip, you may find yourself craving a quick bite to eat, and Costco makes it easy to shop and snack in the same place. Many Americans are familiar with Costco's food court offerings of pizza, chicken bakes, and its famously low-priced hot dog combo, which has remained at just $1.50 since 1984.
Japan has 31 Costco locations. One TikTok user visited a Costco in Japan and showed off their haul from the food court there. Commenters were shocked at how many different options were available on the menu — including a giant bucket of chicken nuggets and fries.
These TikTok users tried a variety of foods
In Japan, Costco's food court offerings look a little different. TikTok user @haleyandzach_ took a trip to the store to taste-test some of the foods there and posted a video sharing their experience. They tried clam chowder and called it "surprisingly good." The store also sells thin-crust Margherita pizza, which earned an 8/10 rating from the duo. They also tried a bulgogi bake, a slushy, and a hamburger.
One item the duo ordered to share was a "huge" bucket of chicken nuggets and fries. The bucket features a paper divider, separating the two food items. Haley said the fries "weren't anything special," though she said the nuggets were "decent." Overall, she gave the combo a 5/10 rating.
TikTok user @emillieinjapan also shared her experience at a Japanese Costco, which included a stop at the food court. She also ordered the chicken nugget bucket, and her video showed that the menu item costs 880 yen, or around $6.46 USD — a great bargain if you're looking to feed a few people with it.
Fried chicken is popular in Japan
Commenters on @haleyandzach_'s video were jealous of the international Costco food court's options. One comment read, "American Costco needs to get on this level." Another wrote, "I'm drooling over the bucket." One was impressed with the amount of food they got for the price, commenting "that size of that chicken/fries bucket" alongside a shocked face emoji.
The menu item may take inspiration from KFC's buckets of fried chicken. In Japan, eating fried chicken has become a tradition for many around the holidays. The "Kentucky for Christmas" campaign was launched by KFC in 1974, and it eventually became a cultural phenomenon. December 23 to 25 boast the biggest sales each year for KFC in Japan, and many people pre-order their food to guarantee they'll be able to enjoy the fried chicken on Christmas.
Unfortunately, this bucket of chicken and fries is only available at Costco food courts in Japan, so American Costco members won't be able to grab the bucket on their next shopping trip. Still, there are plenty of delicious offerings available in the United States — and if you ever travel internationally, your membership card will grant you access.
