Martha Stewart's Hard Boiled Egg Guacamole Is Riling People Up
The deep roots of Martha Stewart's family tree can be traced to Poland — both her maternal and paternal grandparents were born there (per Welt). The future food and lifestyle icon and media mogul grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, where her grandfather owned and operated a tavern and her mother (also named Martha Kostyra), welcomed her daughter in the kitchen and taught her how to make essential Polish fare, like pierogis (dumplings stuffed with potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, and other ingredients), kielbasa (savory Polish sausage), and babka, a yeasty, braided sweet bread.
Somewhere along the line, like so many Americans, Stewart developed a taste for Mexican food. One of her websites is packed with zesty Mexican-inspired recipes for Taco Tuesday or Taco Anyday, including ground chicken and ground turkey tacos, slow cooker chili chicken tacos, Mexican corn, fresh tomato salsa, and, of course, guacamole (per Martha Stewart). When it's Guac O'Clock, she might make guacamole with tomatoes, without tomatoes, and even with chopped hard-boiled egg, a surprise addition that some on TikTok say has no place in guacamole whatsoever.
TikTok: 'I have never seen a guacamole with eggs'
There are as many different ways to make guacamole as there are people in this world, it seems, and Martha Stewart's guacamole tutorial on TikTok starts out innocently enough. To a giant earthenware mortar and pestle (which she mentions also doubles as a favorite bed of one of her cats when it's not in use for food prep), Stewart adds four to five avocados, deftly using the blade of her knife to stab each pit and pull it out. The avocados should be "soft to the touch, not mushy,” Stewart notes. She then adds the classic guacamole flavor enhancers: white onion, diced tomato, minced jalapeno, salt, fresh lime juice, and the ever-controversial cilantro. Last but not least, Stewart says, "comes one other crazy ingredient” — a hard-boiled egg.
What?! TikTok isn't buying the added protein of a hard-boiled egg in its collective guacamole. "In my 37 years of Mexican life, I have never seen a guacamole with eggs,” says one commenter. "Married to a Mexican... eggs are 'no bueno' in guacamole,” adds another. "Eggs and cat fur. The foundation of any good guacamole,” another commenter notes with humor and a "Face with Tears of Joy" emoji.
How about guacamole topped with feta or cotija cheese?
This isn't the first time Martha Stewart has invited unexpected, perhaps even unwanted ingredients to the guacamole party. In 2008, actor and restaurant owner Eva Longoria appeared as a guest on Stewart's TV show and put together a chunky guacamole using onion, tomato, serrano peppers (for added heat), cilantro, and — surprise — lemon juice instead of lime juice (per YouTube). As Longoria poured in the lemon juice, Stewart noted she generally uses lime juice.
Variety is the spice of life, and apparently, Stewart isn't content to make guacamole the same old way every time she craves it. One of her recipes is garnished with toasted pepitas and a couple of spoonfuls of feta or cotija cheese crumbles (per Martha Stewart). For a Taco Truck-Style Guacamole, Stewart adds tomatillos to the mix (per Martha Stewart). Another of Stewart's guacamole variations has hints of sweetness, thanks to the addition of cubed mango and Anjou pear (via Martha Stewart). Guac with fruit is popular in the Mexican states of Morelos and Guanajuato, Stewart notes. We're not sure what TikTok would think about that.
