Workers' Fight To Form Unions In The South
The South has formed the smallest number of unions in the United States, which has lead to poor working conditions, lack of workers' rights, and limited protection for employees. Mountaire Farms, a chicken processing plant and slaughterhouse southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina is one location where the fight to form unions is brewing. "If we really want justice throughout the nation, then labor's got to fight the battle where it's hardest; and there's no question that that's here in the South," said MaryBe McMillan, secretary-treasurer of the North Carolina AFL-CIO.
