Summer's Healthiest And Unhealthiest Coffee Beverages Slideshow
Worst: Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino(580 calories, 21 grams of fat, 93 grams of sugar)
Better: Iced Skinny Mocha (100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 8 grams of sugar)
Frappuccinos are cold and creamy, but the fat from the cream base and topping of whipped cream will spin your diet a complete 180 and send you in the wrong direction. The Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino is drenched with high-sugar syrups, and a crunchy sugar topping, making the calorie count soar. Instead, order the Iced Skinny Mocha. "Skinny" options at Starbucks make it easy to enjoy your coffee without the extra fat, because they automatically include sugar-free syrups and nonfat milk, without you having to specify. And of course, it is still delicious, iced Starbucks coffee with a hint of chocolaty mocha flavor.
Dunkin' Donuts
Worst: Frozen Caramel Coffee Coolatta (550 calories, 11 grams of fat, 107 grams of sugar)
Better: Iced Caramel Latte Light (120 calories, 0 grams of fat, 15 grams of sugar)
Dunkin Donuts is great for a grab-and-go experience in the summer when you need a cold coffee drink, but a Coffee Coolatta is not the healthiest option. Made with sugary caramel syrup, cream, and topped with whipped cream, it is both high in calories and a danger to your summer body. This Caramel Coffee Coolatta contains 107 grams of sugar, which is half a cup of sugar — so imagine drinking straight sugar before you order! Ditch the Coolatta and instead have an Iced Caramel Latte Light, which is on the DD Smart menu. The nonfat milk and low-calorie caramel will still satisfy your sweet tooth without adding extra calories.
Seattle's Best Coffee
Worst: Frozen Birthday Cake Latte (510 calories, 19 grams of fat, 66 grams of sugar)
Better: Skinny Iced Mocha (170 calories, 5 grams of fat, 32 grams of sugar)
At Seattle's Best Coffee everyday can be your birthday, apparently. Topped with vanilla-flavored whipped cream, white chocolate shavings and colorful sprinkles, the drink hits high marks on the calorie and sugar fronts. So we advise: maybe have this "birthday treat" just once a year. But Seattle's Best also has a less than 200-calorie alternative to the Frozen Birthday Cake Latte — which is Seattle's worst (but admittedly quite delicious!). If you want to enjoy something a little lower in calories but with a chocolate-y kick, we recommend the skinny Iced Mocha — still on the sweet side, but much less in calories and fat.
McDonald's
Worst: McCafé Frappé Chocolate Chip (630 calories, 26 grams of fat, 81 grams of sugar)
Better: Iced Coffee with Sugar-Free French Vanilla Syrup (120 calories, 7 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar)
Guess which has more calories, a Big Mac or a McCafé Frappé Chocolate Chip? If you guessed the Big Mac, you're wrong. In fact, the Frappé has 50 more calories than a Big Mac. Stay away from this creamy drink this summer, and stick with an Iced Coffee with Sugar-Free French Vanilla Syrup.
Burger King
Worst: BK Caramel Frappé (510 calories, 22 grams of fat, 49 grams of sugar)
Better: Smooth Roast Vanilla Iced Coffee (180 calories, 7 grams of fat, 23 grams of sugar)
Burger King has many high-fat and high-sugar options, but its coffee drinks probably aren't the first things that come to mind. But at 510 calories with a whopping (no pun intended) 22 grams of fat, and 49 grams of sugar, the Frappé is what should be known as a BK Whopper. A safer, yet still cold and delicious, option at Burger King is the new Smooth Roast Vanilla Iced Coffee.
Tim Hortons
Worst: Mocha Iced Capp with Cream (550 calories, 28 grams of fat, 62 grams of sugar)
Better: Iced Mocha with Milk (220 calories, 6 grams of fat, 31 grams of sugar)
A Canadian favorite with several U.S. locations, Tim Horton's is known for its donuts and coffee. And thankfully, a healthy alternative to the Mocha Iced Cappuccino exists. Avoid the cream, whipped topping, and caramel sauce at all costs when trying to stay healthy, and instead opt for the Iced Mocha with Milk. It's not the healthiest coffee beverage out there, but you can halve your intake of calories, fat, and sugar by choosing it over the Mocha Iced Capp.
Sonic
Worst: Mocha Java Chiller (890 calories, 41 grams of fat, 72 grams of sugar)
Better: Premium Roast Coffee (15 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 grams of sugar)
As a drive-thru, Sonic is a summer post-beach favorite for icy drinks, but don't let their Mocha Java Chiller fool you. With more fat than a large serving of Sonic french fries (the large fries have 22 grams of fat), the caffeine jolt doesn't compare to the damage this will do to your bikini bod. Better to stick to plain coffee at this fast-food spot.
Dishonorable Mentions
Cold Stone Creamery
Worst: Lotta Caramel Latte (1,100 calories, 58 grams of fat, 119 grams of sugar)
Cold Stone Creamery is known for many cold treats, and they make sure to offer a coffee drink, too! But this summer, we recommend you skip Cold Stone as your caffeine chill destination. With 1,100 calories and almost a full day's serving of fat, the Lotta Caramel Latte does a whole lotta damage to beach-ready bodies this summer.
Baskin-Robbins
Worst: Turtle Cappuccino Blast (780 calories, 21 grams of fat, 107 grams of sugar)
Made with ice cream and sugary syrups, this coffee-flavored drink is definitely not going to be healthy. A "blast" of caffeine might hit you, but you can't ignore the unhealthy aspect of this Baskin-Robbins treat.
Friendly's
Worst: Coffee Fribble Shake (780 calories, 31 grams of fat, 88 grams of sugar)
"Friendly's, where ice cream makes the meal." In this case, ice cream makes the drink. You may believe you are drinking a cool, coffee treat but in fact it's a milkshake made with ice cream. If you can't afford to add 780 calories to your beverage account, skip Friendly's when searching for a cold coffee beverage.
