The Market At Larimer Square's Caliente Cocoa

The Market At Larimer Square's Caliente Cocoa
3 (2 ratings)
In quaint downtown Denver, we found a spicy cup of cocoa sure to wake you up in the sleepiest of mornings. This shop, a small, family-owned business in the heart of Larimer Street, kicks their cocoa up a notch by using sweet ground cocoa, cinnamon, and cayenne to create their Caliente Cocoa. Use as much or as little of the cayenne as you want to give your cocoa a burst of flavor — but do it at your own risk!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup sweetened ground cocoa (they use mocafe brand fair trade dominican sweet ground cocoa)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 70 ounce warm or steamed milk
  • 1 teaspoon sweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon caliente mix (or to taste)
Directions
  1. Mix ingredients together. The longer you let the mix sit, the stronger the cayenne will infuse into the cocoa. The mix will last several weeks/months if kept in a resealable container.
  2. Warm or steam your milk of choice. Add sweetened cocoa and Caliente Mix to taste, and don't be afraid to play around with the your mix! (Some people love it hot and use just the straight Caliente Mix, others prefer it to be sweet and use more sweetened cocoa.) Whisk (on stove top) or steam (with espresso wand) into milk as you go until well-incorporated. Pour into mug (approximately 8 ounces). Top with whipped cream if you wish.
