It's what took place at a recent poolside party hosted by the Kardashian sisters in Los Angeles, and just the sort of thing that sets the best parties apart from the rest. "An unexpected element, a surprise makes for a great party" says event planner Linnea Johansson, who organized the Kardashian's poolside soirée.

While hiring a troop of synchronized swimmers might seem a bit extreme, the principle applies to any party. One easy way to spice up an at-home party is to switch out the iPod party mix and DJ a few of your favorite vintage records, Johansson recommends, "or freeze drinks into ice pops!"

The Kardashians aside, Johansson has also hosted parties of all sizes for big names like Jennifer Lopez, Donald Trump, Reese Witherspoon, and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
