Feeding America When School Is Out: School Meals Disappear During Summer Break
School's out for summer, but what does that mean for America's low-income children who rely on free or subsidized school meals? A 2010 Feeding America study found that 87 percent of children participating in its subsidized meal program at school often go hungry during the summertime, and that while 21 million children participated in free or reduced priced school meals in 2011, only about two million children received free or subsidized meals during the summer months. Feeding America, along with private, nonprofit, and federal partners, is helping to minimize the gap in nutrition that can occur in the summer months.
