Chefs At Home: The Meatball Shop's Chernow And Holzman Slideshow

Coffee in the morning is a must, from a French press for Chernow, to a Chemex coffeemaker for Holzman. Both of the guys drink it black.

Chernow alternates between eggs for breakfast or fruit and granola. "I usually prefer sweet but now since I've been eating a lot of eggs I prefer savory," he says of his breakfast choices.

Holzman makes a fresh juice for breakfast every morning. On this day it was a combination of beet, cucumber, lemon, parsley, celery, ginger, apple, and carrot. "This is being nice because usually I take my shirt off when I juice," he jokes about avoiding juice splatter.

Both guys have a large selection of books. Holzman's shelves are mostly filled with cookbooks, while Chernow's include books about art and travel, plus classics like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. 

Whenever the guys go on a television show, they take a mug as a souvenir. Holzman says of The Tonight Show, "The best part about it though is I was super nervous so they filled it up with whiskey."

This room is on the other side of the apartment with his bedroom and an extra closest-like room in between. The fireplace on the right doesn't work, but he has candles in there to set the mood.

In the morning Chernow listens to a mix of slow melodic music, while Holzman is mainly a radio-listener, sometimes NPR and sometimes classic rock. He jokes, "Radio's not really good for when you have a girl over and you're trying to set the mood." 

Judging by this photo with his brother, we'd say Holzman (left) could have had a long and lucrative modeling career.

Riley looks up from the stairs interested in coming up to the roof.

Chernow picks up a few things from the rooftop deck that hadn't been used since the previous summer. Either that, or he's walking down a runway. Hard to tell.

Holzman took a ton of photos on his trip to Japan, and loves showing them off. He went to a baseball game there and says of it, "So check this out — every single person in Japan dresses up in their team's color and goes completely crazy. Like if somebody gets a walk, they go crazy like a grand slam. They have conductors conducting the chants. These girls walk around wearing keg backpacks and they walk around and fill your beers."

On the left is a replica of Abraham Lincoln's hand on Holzman's mantle, and on the right is Holzman putting the finishing touches on some potato leek soup.

Chernow and his wife have lived in this apartment for about six years, and they built this shelving unit when they moved in.

On one side of Holzman's kitchen is where he keeps his pots and pans, plus a full bar below, and in the middle are jars of his homemade hot sauce.

No shoes allowed in Holzman's apartment, and always judge everyone by their socks.

On Chernow's fridge are photos of the good buds from a couple different Meatball Shop parties.

Holzman surveys the living room from his thinking chair. The painting on the wall is an oil on canvas by Kon Trubkovich, the only piece of wall art not done by Holzman's mother.

Chernow's pots and pans hang from a vintage wooden sled. Holzman's knives, some of which are quite large, hang from a wall in his kitchen.

Vintage paintings of horses hang on Chernow's wall, and on the right is a recycling poster that hangs in Holzman's kitchen. He prides himself on having a nearly waste-free kitchen, only taking the trash out once every two months.

I mean, come on.
