7 Fast-Food Holiday Drinks To Avoid Slideshow
If you thought eggnog alone was a drink that tipped the calorie scale, just imagine what happens when it's featured as a milkshake flavor. Go for the large, 24-ounce size of the real vanilla ice cream and eggnog syrup shake and you'll be filled with more than holiday cheer — try 1,135 calories (487 from fat) and 37 grams of saturated fat. And their other holiday offering, a Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Shake, is almost equally indulgent at 1,129 calories for the large size. For either one of those liquid desserts, you might as well have ordered three cheesecakes off the menu (it would actually save you about 200 calories).
Sonic Drive-In: Pumpkin Pie Shake
Everyone's favorite Thanksgiving dessert gets the milkshake treatment at the popular drive-in fast-food chain. In a large, 20-ounce size, the mix of ice cream, pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pieces of pie crust will cost you a whopping 1,040 calories (420 of which are from fat). To put that into perspective, there are less calories in four orders of small chili and cheese tater tots, or three 32-ounce cherry limeades.
Chick-fil-A: Peppermint Chocolate Chip Shake
With this new seasonal offering, the "Eat Mor Chikin" cows seem to be sending another message: "Drink Mor Calories." A large size of the tempting holiday shake contains 930 calories, 31 grams of fat (20 of which are saturated fat), and 127 grams of sugars. That's almost as many calories as there are in four orders of the eight-count chicken nuggets. Looks like you might as well have been eating more chicken after all.
Starbucks: Eggnog Latte
The coffee giant has no shortage of seasonal drink options — peppermint mocha latte, gingerbread latte, salted caramel mocha, pumpkin spice latte — but it's their eggnog latte that earns top billing when it comes to calorie count. A venti size made with whole milk has 620 calories and 29 grams of fat (and this one doesn't even offer the option of whipped cream!). Indulge in a couple of these during their limited holiday run and you're probably going to want to stick to the 100-calorie tall nonfat lattes for a while.
Jamba Juice: Pumpkin Smash Smoothie
A pumpkin smoothie sounds pretty harmless, right? But with 550 calories in a 24-ounce original size, this limited-time-only smoothie is definitely more trick than treat. There are just 20 calories more in the much more indulgent-sounding, original size Chocolate Moo'd.
Dunkin' Donuts: Peppermint Mocha Latte
Of the various flavors joining the doughnut chain's seasonal drink roster, the peppermint mocha latte is the most costly in the calorie department. At 470 calories for a large size using whole milk (the cinnamon swirl and gingerbread lattes come in at 440), the holiday latte is approximately equal to 13 glazed cocoa Munchkins, or three large skim vanilla lattes.
McDonald's: McCafé Peppermint Hot Chocolate
While you may be lovin' the taste of this seasonal, peppermint-flavored hot chocolate, you probably won't be as enamored with the 410 calories and 17 grams of fat it'll cost you for a large size made with whole milk. That's only 60 calories less than a 10-piece portion of Chicken McNuggets, and more or less the equivalent of drinking three small McCafé lattes.
